The University of Botswana is happy to announce significant achievements by Professor Bernahu Abegaz who has been honoured by reputable international organisations because of his meritorious scholarly work.

Prof Abegaz has been elected President of the International Society for the Development of Natural Products (ISDNP) and as a consequence of this distinguished achievement, ISDNP and the International Organisation for Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD) will hold a major international conference in Botswana in 2008. The Dean of Science, Professor Otlogetswe Totolo has warmly congratulated Professor Abegqaz on his outstanding research achievement in the hierarchy of international scholars. Professor Totolo said Professor Abegaz, has in the process advanced the good name and reputation of the University on the international academic stage.

He said it was an honour for UB to host such a prestigious international conference. This, he said, is clear evidence of the quality of research output by Prof Abegaz and his research in the area of natural products chemistry. In September 2006, Prof Abegaz will receive the "Prof CNR Rao Prize for Scientific Research". This Prize is instituted to honour distinguished scientists from developing countries who have made distinguished contribution to science in their countries. Prof. Abegaz will be the first African scholar to receive it.

Prof Abegaz has recently won two research grants from the National Science Foundation with some South African partners and they are detailed as follows:

1. Title of the Project: Development of Novel Compounds with Antiplasmodial activity isolated from an indigenous Southern African traditional medicinal plant. Level of Funding: R600 000.00

2. Title of the Project: Development of useful antifungal agents primarily from invasive and weedy plant species Level of Funding: R530 000.00.
